Hazards of sleep

GetEnoughSleep.gifSleep bring many hazards. News reports this week highlight two of them — one for married couples, the other for teenagers.

The March 26, 2006 issue of The Hindu reveals the first hazard:

Uttering talaq three times in sleep lands couple in soup

Siliguri, March. 26 (PTI): A Muslim couple in Jalpaiguri district have been ordered by local religious leaders to separate as the husband allegedly uttered ‘talaq‘ three times in his sleep.

While the couple, who have three children, refused to obey the order since there was no discord between them, the community leaders are adamant that they must separate or face a “social boycott”.
Aftab Ansari and Sohela have been married for the past 11 years. However, on the night of December 20 last year, Aftab allegedly uttered ‘talaq’ three times in his sleep after a tiff with his wife.

The matter is followed up in the March 29 issue of the Mumbai Mirror:

Couple in talaq row register marriage

Dalgaonbasti: The Muslim couple who were told to separate after it emerged that the husband had uttered ‘talaq’ thrice in his sleep have registered their marriage in a civil court. But the moulvi (priest) in their village in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, who ordered them to separate, refused to accept the civil marriage registered by Aftab saying it does not have religious sanctity.

A different sleep hazard was reported on March 28 by CBS News:

Many of America’s adolescents are going through life sleep-deprived. Only 20 percent get the recommended nine hours of shuteye on school nights, and more than one in four report sleeping in class, according to a poll by the National Sleep Foundation released Tuesday.
