David Serre has re-joined the Luxuriant Flowing Hair Club for Scientists after a temporary and wonderfully mysterious absence. Alexandre Montpetit, who nominated him, says:David is known as the Hair dude (see picture) or the Cheese Whiz because of his taste for strong French cheeses and the fact that he applied (successfully) for a grant to sequence the microbial population of cheeses (aka Cheesequencing!). He is currently finishing a post-doctoral fellowship under Dr. Thomas J.Hudson at McGill University and will soon start up his own lab at the Cleveland Clinic of Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Serre is a well-known (and, surprisingly, respected) figure in the field of population genetics. He has worked with Dr.Paabo on the DNA isolation from Neanderthal bones which has recently lead to the sequencing of a small fraction of its genome. David has published his research in high quality journals such as Genome Research, PNAS and PLoS Biology.
