06 LIMERICK CHALLENGE: Coffee Stains on Teeth

This month's RESEARCH LIMERICK challenge — Devise a pleasing limerick that encapsulates this study:

"Can We Prevent Coffee Stains on Teeth?" Tugce Odabas, Rufat Hajiyev, Ahmet Gultekin, Ozge Ozer Atakoglu, and Osman Tolga Harorli, Journal of Medicinal Food, vol. 24, no. 12, 2021, pp. 1331-1339.

doi.org/10.1089/jmf.2020.0205

The authors explain:

"The teeth submitted to coffee challenges after distillated water or beverages showed a perceptible color change. Soaking in cola or orange juice before coffee immersion caused severe tooth discoloration. All the beverages tested here were not able to protect the tooth from coffee staining. People should be informed that some acidic beverages consumed before a coffee can worsen the coffee-based tooth discolorations."

Send your perfictly formed, perfectly pleasing limerick to:

BRAIN EXTRACTION LIMERICK COMPETITION

07 Brain Extraction Winner

The judges have chosen a winner in last month's Competition, which asked for a limerick to explain this study:

"Fast Robust Automated Brain Extraction," Stephen M. Smith, Human Brain Mapping, vol. 17, no. 3, 2002, pp. 143-155. doi.org/10.1002/hbm.10062

Winning limerickicist DAVID WEINBERGER writes:

How much does your skull contain,

And how much of it is nonbrain?

  By surgeon or bot,

  Take out what is not:

More carry-on space on a plane.

This month's take, from our LIMERICK LAUREATE, MARTIN EIGER:

A team of neurologists ran

My head through an MRI scan.

Though they went to great pain,

They could not find my brain.

With this method, there's hope that they can.

09 Though It May Stain, It Smells Good

This month's Other Haphazardly-Selected Research Report (OQHSRROTM) of the month is:

"The Calming Effect of Roasted Coffee Aroma in Patients Undergoing Dental Procedures," Praewpat Pachimsawat, Kanlayanee Tangprasert, and Nattinee Jantaratnotai, Scientific Reports, vol. 11, no. 1, 2021, article 1384.

doi.org/10.1038/s41598-020-80910-0

The authors explain:

"Salivary α-amylase (sAA) and cortisol (sCort) levels were measured as proxies of sympathetic nervous system and hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis responses to stress respectively. Blood pressures and pulse rates were recorded. The results showed that undergoing dental procedures could increase sAA and sCort levels of the patients inhaling sham aroma while those inhaling coffee aroma had significantly decreased sAA and sCort levels (40% and 25% differences, respectively). The pulse rates of those inhaling coffee aroma were also lower. Subjective assessment using visual analog scale was in line with objective measures as well. The preference for coffee aroma or the frequency of coffee drinking had no effect on the sAA and sCort responses."
