GREAT NAMES REVISITED--
Jesus Mustache Roman

Spotlighting individuals who have made a name for themselves

by Alice Shirrell Kaswell, AIR staff

Not long ago we asked whether anyone could tell us about the life and work of Professor Jesus Mustache Roman. Now we have learned the truth.

What We Thought We Know

All we knew about Professor Jesus Mustache Roman is that he was the subject of an article published thirty years ago:

"Posthumous Homage to Professor Jesus Mustache Roman" [Article in Spanish], Revista del Colegio Nacional de Enfermeras, vol. 17, no. 5, October-December 1970, pp. 18-20.

Thanks to investigator Chana Lajcher, we now know that it was all a horrible mistake.

Investigator Lajcher's Report

Here is investigator Lajcher's report:

I am afraid that Jesus Mustache Roman is a typographical error that appeared in Medline. His name really was "Mastache," not "Mustache."

Jesus Mastache Roman was a real person, apparently a Mexican politician or perhaps a well-known educator. At <http://www.cddhcu.gob.mx/camdip/comdip/comibib/integ/xlii.htm> he is listed as a member of the legislative committee for the National Library of Mexico.

The same name is mentioned (at <http://www.ur.mx/principal/humani/maestros/margarita/vidal1.HTM>) as an educator thanked by a student for helping him with his education by giving him a recommendation to another institution.

I found someone in the Mexico City phonebook (yellow pages) listed under governmental:

SEP PRIMARIA JESUS MASTACHE R GOMEZ FARIAS 29 COL. BENITO JUAREZ C.P.08930 CIUDAD DE MEXICO, DF TEL: (01)56493972

We owe thanks to investigator Lajcher for her diligent work to eradicate this false Mustache from the scientific literature.

A Good, Cheap Imitation

All is not lost, though, for those who admire the name Jesus Mustache Roman. Investigator Andrew Hopkins alerted us to the "Mustaches in History" project, which appears to tie together the pieces comprising the unusual name.
