"Spectral Reflectance Properties of French Fries," S. Panigrahi, D. Wiesenborn, et al., Applied Engineering in Agriculture, Vol. 12, no. 6, 1996, pp. 721-24. (Thanks to Ferd Blivet for bringing this to our attention.) The authors report that:
Knowledge of these spectral reflectance properties aided in identifying suitable light sources and camera(s) for developing a color computer vision system for automatic classification of french fries.

The Dark Side

"The Dark Side of Self- and Social Perception: Black Uniforms and Aggression in Professional Sports," Mark G. Frank and Thomas Gilovich, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, vol. 54, no. 1, 1988, pp. 74-85. (Thanks to Rachel Ferris, Thomas Landos, and many others for bringing this to our attention.) The authors report that:
An analysis of the penalty records of the National Football League and the National Hockey League indicate that teams with black uniforms in both sports ranked near the top of their leagues in penalties throughout the period of study. On those occasions when a team switched from nonblack to black uniforms, the switch was accompanied by an immediate increase in penalties.
