Animal noises: The Animal Sound Archive

Dr. Gustav Peters of the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK), Bonn, Germany, is one of the world’s foremost authorities on purring. Not only the purring of cats (Felidae) but also of the Viverridae (genets, binturongs, civets, and linsangs etc.) He has published extensively on the subject – for example see: Purring and similar vocalizations in mammals (Mammal Review, Volume 32, Issue 4, pages 245–271, December 2002) Dr. Peters is also curator of the Animal Sound Archive at ZFMK, and in the course of his work has also investigated :
• Humming in bears: a peculiar sustained mammalian vocalization.
• The vocal repertoire of Graphiurus parvus, and comparisons with other species of dormice.
• The call of the Aldabra tortoise (Geochelone gigantea), and
• The body buzz of bats: a largely disregarded type of communication signal in mammals? (sorry: no online link)
