In humans, mucus is the thick fluid that coats the airways in order to catch pathogens that would otherwise enter the lungs (and thence the bloodstream) when air is breathed in. For mucus to work, though, it must travel to the mouth, where it is spit out or swallowed. Researchers at the University of North Carolina, a group including Roberto Camassa, Michael Jenkinson, Shreyas Tikare, Jeffrey Olander, and Reed Ogrosky, study the way in which the body gets rid of mucus.
