Speech Recognition Challenge: Joe Cocker

Speech recognition technology has improved drastically in recent decades. But challenges remain. This video is a demonstration of that fact. It shows the singer Joe Cocker’s famous performance, at the Woodstock festival in 1969, of the Beatles song “With a Little Help From My Friends.”

This video (to play it, click on the image) includes superimposed text of the words that Mr. Cocker was apparently singing, and some helpful graphics. We do not know who made this version, or whether they really did use speech recognition technology. But we hope so.

(Thanks to Metafilter for bringing this to our attention.)

NOTE: Several years after Mr. Cocker’s performance, it was proved that speech reproduction easier to do than speech recognition.
